Frequently Asked Questions
"In Europe we thought of wine as something as healthy and normal as food and also a great giver of happiness and well being and delight. Drinking wine was not a snobbism nor a sign of sophistication nor a cult; it was as natural as eating and to me as necessary." --Ernest Hemingway
How do you store a bottle of wine that has been opened?
Both red and white wines can be stored in your refrigerator once opened. Wine does begin to lose it flavor once it is opened so only a few days in the refrigerator is best. To serve wine again, take your red wine out of the refrigerator 30 - 60 minutes prior to serving to come to the proper temperature of 60 degrees average. For white which is served chilled it is only necessary to remove from refrigerator for 20 - 30 minutes prior to serving so it has time to come to its best temperature of 45 degrees average.
What is the best way to store your wine bottles?
How you store your wine bottles is important. There are many facts to consider in determining what will work best for you. If you have the money and the space, a wine cellar in your home would be the ultimate wine storage solution. However, for most of us that is just not possible. Here are some basic wine storage facts to keep in mind while making this decision for yourself.
*Store bottle up or on its side? Wine bottles with cork tops should be stored on their side to prevent the corks from drying out. Wine bottles with synthetic corks or screw tops can be stored upright.
*Light. Exposing your wine to too much light can affect the freshness and flavor of the wine. Keeping your wine from direct sunlight is a good idea. So look to place your wine rack on a counter top that provides the most protection from the sun. If you prefer having your wine selection on your buffet or in an area where it will receive a lot of light during the day, drape your wine rack with a towel to block some of the light from your wine bottles. It will help keep the dust from settling on your wine rack and wine bottles as well.
